Begin your time with God by praying. Ask God to reveal any selfishness in your heart. Confess that to him and thank him for his forgiveness. Lay any worries or concerns before him. He wants you to pour out your heart to him!
Ask God to speak to you as you spend time in his Word. Ask him for insight so that you can understand the truths you are about to read. Ask him to use it to impact you today.
Scripture:
Read the scripture for the day. You may use your own Bible for this so that you can underline anything that speaks to you. You may also want to write those verses down in a journal. Take your time as you read the passage and make sure you really comprehend what you are reading. It may take you reading it 3 or 4 times.
James 4:7-10
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Observation:
Think about what this scripture means. You may want to journal anything that comes to mind.
What do you learn about God and his character from this passage?
What do you learn about yourself or your relationship to God?
What do you think it means to submit? To resist? Think about the significance of humbling yourself before God.
Application:
Again, you are welcome to journal anything that God puts on your heart.
How does this passage apply to your life right now?
How will what you have read transform or change your thinking and how you live today?
Prayer:
Respond to God with a prayer. You may want to journal this prayer. Talk to him about what he showed you through his Word today. Ask him to help you submit your will to his will, and resist any temptation that may come your way today.
End you your prayer time by asking God to come near to you as you come near to him. Thank him for always being with you. Commit your day to him.
