We cannot come before God and expect to hear his voice if we have unconfessed sin on our hearts. For this reason, take some time to ask the Lord to search your heart and show you any disobedience. Don't rush through this. In order to hear God, you have to listen. Allow yourself a few minutes of silence.
Once the Lord reveals those things to you, admit them to him and thank him for his forgiveness. Ask him to speak to you as you read his Word and talk to him.
Scripture:
Read the scripture for the day. You may use your own Bible for this so that you can underline anything that speaks to you. You may also want to write those verses down in a journal. In order to let God's Word soak into your heart and mind you may want to read it two or three times through.
1 John 1:5-10 (NIV)
5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Observation:
Think about what this scripture means. You may want to journal anything that comes to mind.
What do you learn about God and his character from this passage?
What do you learn about yourself or your relationship to God?
What do you learn about light and darkness? Think about how it is contrasted.
Application:
Again, you are welcome to journal anything that God puts on your heart.
How does this passage apply to your life right now?
How will what you have read transform or change your thinking and how you live today?
Prayer:
Respond to God with a prayer. You may want to journal this prayer. Talk to him about what he showed you through his Word today.
Thank him for the gift of his son, Jesus. Thank him for the fellowship you have with him because of Jesus.
Commit your day to him.
